top summer skin care tips to help you look your best

Summer is a vibe.

The hot days (not the ones over 30ºC, yuck), the balmy nights, the blue skies, the rooftop bars, the cute dresses, the many cocktails that somehow just taste better in Summer, the beach days, the 'quick dip in the pool''s, the tennis on TV, seriously we could go on and on.

Essentially, when the sun comes out, my skin cells wanna play. They've been sleeping through the Winter and now they're ready to make Summer they're b**ch.

However, this Summer feels different. Not only is our skin coming out of being locked inside for most of this year, it's also had a piece of fabric placed over it when all it really wants to do is be left alone, thank you very much.

This has almost, most definitely caused your skin to freak the f**k out (mine included), and tbh, I can't blame it. The last couple of months has seen my skin go from 'kinda-normal with the occasional breakout', to 'there's a party on my face and every blackhead, dry patch, pimple and wrinkle is invited'. Not ideal.

This means you'd better have a really good Summer skin care routine up your sleeve or else the skin irritation party will still be in full swing, showing no signs of slowing down even when you've filed at least 2 noise complaints.

Now we know transitioning from your Winter skin care routine to a brand new Summer one can sometimes be a bit expenny ($$$) but luckily for you, I've put together some simple must-have items and top tips to keep your skin lookin' fresh, healthy and glowin' all through the sunny season.

how summer affects your skin

It's no secret that the blazing sun wreaks havoc on our skin. Not only is the heat oppressive but the UV rays are super unforgiving and will pinpoint with absolute accuracy exactly where you forgot to put your sunscreen on and won't hesitate to burn the unprotected area. Honestly, how nice of it.

These conditions can snatch your natural glow-y, dewy and radiant skin right out from under your nose (literally) and leave you with desert-like dry skin that requires you to moisturise it every 2-4 seconds at least. Slight exaggeration but you get the point.

The back and forth nature of Summer (dry weather one minute then humid weather the next) not only encourages dryness but also sees an increase in the oil production from your sebaceous glands (a small gland beneath the skin's surface), leavin' you with an oiler than usual complexion.

As if that wasn't bad enough, the hot weather actually enlarges your pores and exposes them to a whole heap of nasties including more oil, dirt, bacteria and whatever else your skin's likely to pick up from the daily grind which then gets trapped.

This is why having a Summer skin care routine is super duper important.

meet exfoliation, your new best friend

There's pretty much no skin care routine on the face of this Earth that doesn't require you to do some form of exfoliation, and you wanna know why that is? It's because exfoliating your skin is one of the best things you could ever do for it.

You want brighter, smoother skin? Exfoliate. You want a radiant and even skin tone? Exfoliate. You want to feel like your best damn self? Pop on some tunes, pour yourself a glass of wine, then exfoliate.

Our body sheds skin cells every single day and if we don't get rid of them, they just sit there causing build-up on our face, clogging our pores and congesting our skin. They won't even leave if you ask them nicely.

The only way to restore your skin from dull to dewy is to use a gentle exfoliator on your face and a more abrasive one for your body.

Why not try out our hemp + sugar body scrub that's guaranteed to minimise breakouts, encourage cell turnover and let all the good stuff you put on your face after it, get your skin in tip top condition.

cleanse your skin

No matter how you're about to clean your face or what products you're about to clean it with, it's important to have a fresh base.

One of the best ways to ensure this is to use a cleanser. Funnily enough, while hot weather does encourage your skin to produce more oil, an oil based cleanser is the perfect skin care solution for balancing your skin and thoroughly cleaning it without causing any kind of irritation whatsoever. Go figure right?

Now we're a little bias but our hemp blemish face oil serum is perfect for a little gentle cleansing, as well as helping to ditch those dark spots and say 'see ya later' to breakouts.

moisturise + hydrate

Let us say something real quick. Your skin can never have enough hydration, especially when it comes to spending time outside in Summer.

Your body naturally loses a lot of moisture during the sunny season (which is totally understandable because those hot days will make you s-w-e-a-t), causing your skin to feel itchy and thirsty AF.

When your skin's in need of a drink, opt for a moisturiser that's water based and try using it two times a day (once in the morning and once before you go to bed). This will ensure your skin's lookin' real fresh, smooth and glow-y throughout the day. Just the way you like it.

use protection, always

...and last but not least, the very best tip when it comes to your Summer skin care routine is without a doubt, using sunscreen any time you leave the house.

Regardless of whether you're going out for a 30 minute walk, to your local supermarket or you're just putting the bins out, putting on sunscreen is a must-do, even if it's not that sunny outside.

Not only will wearing sunscreen help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, it will also help your skin to look its youthful best, chasing away age spots, under-eye bags and dark patches. Oh and it'll also help keep you safe from skin cancer which is a definite plus.

We recommend reapplying your sunscreen every couple of hours or, if you've just been for a swim (lucky you), every hour.Â
